1. an evergreen tree native to the Andes Mountains, now also known in the East Indies, India, and tropical America. It is valuable for its bark. Cinchonas belong to the madder family
2. its bitter bark, from which quinine and other drugs are obtained; Peruvian bark. Also, chinchona.
